Located in one of Newport’s most popular residential areas, Bassaleg School accommodates around 1,750 students across eight years, with students ranging between ages 11 and 18. 

The school takes a modern approach to the educational experience for parents, with the ability to streamline absences, appointments and school meal payments via their app. 

In terms of results, 75.8% of Bassaleg’s pupils achieved 5+ GCSEs graded between four and nine last year, which is almost 20% above the national average.

2. St Joseph’s R.C. High School 

Located in Duffryn, St Joseph’s is another high-performing school, receiving excellent scores across the board during its last inspection.

The school has around 1,500 pupils aged between 11 and 18, and has recently moved to more modern buildings to improve comfort and learning quality. 

According to reports, St Joseph’s excels in Care, Guidance and Support, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to protecting and nurturing pupil progression. 

The stats are equally impressive, with 65.6% of students gaining 5+ GCSEs with grades between four and nine last year, which is 9% higher than the national average.

3. Caerleon Comprehensive School 

Caerleon Comprehensive was rated the 6th best secondary school in Wales by WalesOnline, making it a top choice for residents of Caerleon, Ponthir and Langstone. 

With around 1,500 students, including those in sixth form, the school has great facilities and a broad curriculum, being the only school in Newport offering the option to study German. 

Caerleon Comprehensive proves its quality with 76% of its students achieving 5+ GSCEs at grades four to nine in the previous year.

4. The John Frost School 

Another option in the Southwest Newport area is the John Frost School, which houses over 1,400 students of ages 11 to 18.

During its last Estyn assessment, the school scored ‘Good’ in several areas, including ‘Wellbeing & Attitudes to Learning’, ‘Care, Support & Guidance’, and ‘Leadership & Management’.

It also has a dedicated facility for autistic students, which is currently used by around 20 students.

5. Newbridge School

Newbridge School is slightly further afield, sitting about 10 miles northwest of Newport. 

As a result, the school is a lot less crowded, with just under 1,000 students aged 11 to 16. It’s also the only school on the list that doesn’t have a sixth form, hence there are no 17 or 18 year old students. 

The school scored ‘Good’ overall in its last Estyn review, with 44% of its students securing 5+ GCSEs grades between A and A* in 2022. These students scored particularly well in science, history and geography.
