Where to live in Newport (Top 5 areas explored)

Where to live in Newport (Top 5 areas explored)

Are you considering a move to Newport but aren’t sure where exactly you want to live?

Recent data released by Compare My Move sheds light on which areas are the best, offering a look at local amenities, family friendliness, transport links and more.

Using this information and our own local expertise, we’ve created a list of the top 5 best areas to live in Newport.

Let’s take a look:

1. Ridgeway

Ridgeway is a highly sought-after location, perched on a scenic hill overlooking the village of Rogerstone.

It’s a great place to call home for dog lovers, with beautiful woodlands dotted about the surrounding areas.

It’s also just a two-minute stroll from Friars Walk shopping centre, has excellent transport links to Bristol and Cardiff, and boasts impressive schools, like Glasllwch Primary, which was rated excellent in all categories.

Average cost to buy: £387,000[1]

Average cost to rent: £903 PCM

2. Caerleon

Caerleon is a beautiful town with a rich history, being home to various important Neolithic sites like the Roman legionary fortress, Isca Augusta

Besides this, it’s an ideal place to live, with a large selection of good schools, handy transport links to Newport and Cwmbran, and a range of highly rated cafes and restaurants.

The culture and community in the area is also active and friendly, with regular family events being hosted like the Big Free Weekend, an annual arts festival, and an annual Roman military re-enactment in the town’s amphitheatre.

Average cost to buy: £301,035

Average cost to rent: £910 PCM

3. Bassaleg

Bassaleg is another family-friendly location, having some of the best schools in the Cardiff-Newport area, a vibrant cultural scene and a rich history and heritage.

The town is characterised by its thatched cottages, winding country lanes and historical intrigues, like the oldest operational railway bridge and viaduct in Wales.

In terms of practicalities, Bassaleg’s train station provides convenient links to Newport and Cardiff, with both journeys taking just 20 minutes. Junction 28 of the M4 is also less than a mile away.

Average cost to buy: £283,584

Average cost to rent: £957 PCM

4. Ponthir

Next up is Ponthir, a cosy village community that sits around six miles from Newport and just three-and-a-half miles from Cwmbran.

It’s predominantly a residential area, but offers all the amenities, conveniences and facilities you need, like nurseries, playgrounds, sports clubs, shops, pubs, a dental practice and a GP.

The local school, Ponthir Church in Wales Primary, also has the best SATs results in Torfaen, which is great if you have children to enrol.

Average cost to buy: £305,333

Average cost to rent: £900 PCM

5. Llanwern

Last but not least, we have Llanwern, which is home to just 3,000 residents, despite holding almost a quarter of Newport County’s total size within its borders.

This excess space has led to homes in the area being bigger and of excellent quality, perfect for retirees and wealthy homebuyers.

Despite these facts, the area has a lot of upward potential, with over half a million square feet of business space being created in the town.

This is part of the £115,000,000 Glan Llyn Renewal Project, which is expected to produce 6,000 new jobs in the area upon completion.

Average cost to buy: £367,499

Average cost to rent: £921 PCM
